New Reynell Developmental Language Scales Identify speech and language delays and impairments from an early age. The New Reynell Developmental Language Scales have been revised, improved and newly standardised on more than 1,200 children in the UK. This fourth edition retains a mix of play-based activities with a range of stimulus materials which includes a trio of appealing characters that children can handle and ‘direct' as they carry out many of the assessment tasks. The Reynell Developmental Language Scales were first made available in an experimental version in 1969, with revisions in 1977 and 1985 (Reynell 1977, Reynell and Huntley 1985). Throughout this period and beyond, the Scales were amongst the most popular child language assessment tools to be used in the UK. The New Reynell Developmental Language Scales (NRDLS) were trialled on 301 children and then standardized on a sample of 1,266 participants across the age range 2;00–7;06 years. Evaluations of reliability (internal and test–retest) and concurrent validity were carried out and also discriminant validity was evaluated with a further small sample of children with primary language impairment. The Reynell Developmental Language Scales (R.D.L.S.) were developed in response to a clinical need at a center for handicapped children.
